AISI 430F | 1.4104 | X14CrMoS17 | Martensitic stainless steel

Material information according to DIN EN 10088-3

AISI 430F is a martensitic stainless steel. It is also known under the designations 1.4104 and X14CrMoS17 and is characterised by very good machinability. AISI 430F stainless steel has good mechanical properties. The tensile strength of the material is 650 to 680 N/mm², the hardness ≤ 220 HB and the density 7.7 kg/dm³ (at 20°C). The material is magnetisable (ferromagnetic) and can be used for cold forming. AISI 430F / 1.4104 stainless steel has poor welding properties and can only be forged with caution due to its sulphur content. The addition of sulphur also has a negative effect on corrosion resistance (PREN value 16.2 - 19.4) and pitting corrosion can occur in conjunction with seawater or salt. The material cannot be polished and is not usually used for cold-forming. Stainless steel AISI 430F (1.4104 / X14CrMoS17) is regularly used in the automotive industry and for decorative purposes (e.g. kitchen fittings).

The material AISI 430F (1.4104 / X14CrMoS17) has poor welding properties. This material is therefore not usually used for welding. This martensitic steel is not suitable for common welding processes such as TIG welding, arc welding or submerged-arc welding. It can be used for resistance welding. Subsequent heat treatment is required here.

Forging

Due to its sulphur content, Stainless steel AISI 430F has only medium forging properties. The material should first be heated slowly to a temperature of 850°C, followed by rapid heating to 1100°C to 1130°C. The forging process can then be carried out in the temperature range between 1130°C and 750°C. The material is rarely used for freehand and joint forging.

Heat treatment and hot forming

Hot forming (temperature 1100-800 °C) - cooling in air
Soft annealing (+A) (temperature 750-850 °C) - cooling in air or in furnace
Hardening / tempering (+QT) - (temperature 950-1070 °C) - cooling in air, in oil or polymer
Tempering / quenching (+QT650) - (temperature 550-650 °C) - cooling in air

Machinability

Machinability: Due to the sulphur content of 0.15 - 0.35%, the material AISI 430F has very good machinability. The chip breaking behaviour is better than that of comparable steels such as the material 1.4016 (AISI 430).

Cold forming: In principle, the stainless steel AISI 430F can be used for cold forming. The material is not suitable for cold heading and cold forming is only possible to a limited extent.

Corrosion resistance

The stainless steel AISI 430F/1.4104 has a low corrosion resistance (PREN value 16.2 - 19.4), as the sulphur additive contained in the steel has a negative effect on this. It is resistant to steam and nitric acid in low concentrations. It is not resistant to seawater and salt. Pitting corrosion can occur here.

Applications of stainless steel AISI 420C / 1.4034

Stainless steel AISI 430F (1.4104 / X14CrMoS17) is used in various industrial sectors due to its good machinability and the possibility of cold forming. These include the automotive industry, the food industry, mechanical engineering and the construction industry. This stainless steel is also regularly used in the aerospace industry, the chemical industry and petrochemicals. It is also used in electrical engineering or for decorative ornaments, for example in kitchens.
