1.4122 | X39CrMo17-1 | Martensitic stainless steel

Material information according to DIN EN 10088-3

The material 1.4122 (X39CrMo17-1) is a martensitic stainless steel characterised by good mechanical properties and the possibility of specific heat treatment (hardening). Due to its chromium content of 17%, the material has good corrosion resistance (PREN value 18.47 - 20.46) in slightly aggressive media with a low chlorine content. The material is easy to polish (high-gloss polishing is possible) and is magnetisable/magnetic (ferromagnetic value μr ≥ 400). The material has a tensile strength of 750 to 950 N/mm² (≤ 900 in condition +A), a hardness of ≤ 280 (in condition +A) and a density of 7.70 kg/dm³ (at 20°C). The material is not very suitable for welding and is also only moderately forgeable. Cold forming and cold heading are not intended for this material and it is rarely used for machining / machining. The stainless steel 1.4122 (X39CrMo17-1) is often used to make cutting tools such as knives, but it is also used in mechanical engineering or in polymer processing.

Product range: We offer this material in our range as stainless steel wire and as rods/bars.

Stainless steel 1.4122 (X39CrMo17-1) is difficult to weld and should not normally be used for welding. If welding is unavoidable, preheating to a temperature between 300 and 400 °C is required. Subsequent tempering is also necessary. To avoid cracking, heat treatment should be carried out immediately.

Forging

The stainless steel 1.4122 has a medium forging capacity. The material must first be heated slowly to 800 °C and then quickly to a temperature of 1150 °C to 1180 °C. The forging process can then be carried out in the temperature range between 1180 °C and 950 °C. The subsequent cooling can take place in the furnace or in dry ash. This steel is rarely used for open-die forging and drop forging.

Heat treatment and hot forming

Hot forming (temperature 1100-800 °C) - cooling in the furnace
Soft annealing (temperature 900-1050 °C) - cooling in air or in oil
Tempering (temperature 900-1050 °C) - cooling in air or in oil
Annealing (temperature 650-750 °C) - cooling in air

Machinability

Machinability: This stainless steel has only a medium machinability, which depends on the hardness and strength of the material and therefore cannot be assessed globally.

Cold forming: The stainless steel 1.4122 is not intended for cold forming and is usually not used for cold heading

Corrosion resistance

Due to its 17% chromium content, stainless steel 1.4122 has good corrosion resistance (PREN value 18.47 - 20.46). This is particularly the case in media with a low chlorine content and in a slightly aggressive environment. This material is also resistant to organic acids. The corrosion resistance can be improved by polishing. It is not resistant to seawater.

Applications of stainless steel 1.4122 / X39CrMo17-1

Stainless steel 1.4122 (X39CrMo17-1) is used in a range of industrial sectors, including the automotive, construction and food industries. This material is also used in mechanical engineering and apparatus construction, in the cutlery industry and in plastics processing (polymer processing). Stainless steel 1.4122 is used to make knives and surgical instruments, fittings, machine parts and compressors, for example. Pump parts such as pump shafts are also made from this steel.
