Data sheet according to DIN EN 10095 for material number AISI 310S / 1.4845
The material AISI 310S is an austenitic stainless steel, also known as 1.4845, BS 310S16, BS 310S24, BS 310S31 as well as X15CrNiSi25-21. The material belongs to the group of heat-resistant chromium-nickel steels and is characterised by its resistance to high temperatures. The material is resistant to scaling (in air) and can be used up to a temperature of 1050 °C (AISI 314 / 1.4841 is recommended for higher temperatures). Stainless steel AISI 310S is not magnetic/magnetisable. It has a tensile strength of 500 - 750 N/mm², a hardness ≤ 192 HB and a density of 7.9 kg/dm³ (at 20 °C). The material is suitable for many common welding processes such as arc or TIG welding and can also be used for forging and cold forming. Typical industrial applications include instrumentation, furnace construction and the chemical industry.

The stainless steel AISI 310S (1.4845 / X15CrNi25-21) is suitable for many common welding processes. These include arc welding, TIG welding, laser beam welding and MAG welding. The material should not be used for gas welding. The material 1.4842 (X12CrNi25-20) is suitable as a filler material.
Please note that the material is susceptible to intergranular corrosion during welding.
Heat treatment and hot forming
Solution heat treatment (cooling by air or water): 1050-1150 °C
Hot forming (cooling by air): 1150-800 °C
Corrosion resistance
Stainless steel AISI 310S / BS 310S24 is resistant to blast corrosion. In an oxidising atmosphere and in conjunction with a reduced sulphur content, the corrosion resistance is low. In the welded condition, the material is not resistant to intergranular corrosion.
Application area of stainless steel AISI 310S / 1.4845
Due to its good heat resistance, stainless steel AISI 310S (1.4845 / X15CrNiSi25-21) is often used in industrial areas where good resistance to high temperatures is required. An important area of application for stainless steel 1.4845 / 310S24 is the chemical industry. Here it is used to manufacture plant components that have to withstand high temperatures and are also exposed to chemicals. In furnace and blast furnace construction, for example, this material is used for the construction of high-temperature reactors. In the aerospace industry, stainless steel 1.4845 is used for the manufacture of engine components, and in mechanical engineering, the material is used for machine parts that have to withstand high temperatures. In the manufacture of instruments, tanks and pipelines, stainless steel 1.4845 is used for the production of pressure vessels and pipelines.
